Job Description

The New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) is responsible for protecting New Zealand against threats to the border, facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods and collecting customs and excise revenue on behalf of the Crown.

As a Customs Officer you'll play a key role in protecting the interests of Aotearoa. You will be identifying and preventing potential security and community risks from coming in and out of the country.

With a high focus on law enforcement and securing NZ's border, this integral role encompasses a wide range of tasks from identifying risks and investigations, to performing assurance and audits.

Essential for your new role

  • Have a high level of attention to detail and the ability to learn and master new tasks quickly;
  • Have good written and oral communication skills;
  • Have good computer/technology skills and the ability to learn and use other computer applications with confidence;
  • Be passionate and enthusiastic and demonstrate a team player attitude;
  • The ability to problem solve but escalates issues when necessary;

 

Hours of Work:

Standard Hours to be worked between 7am - 7pm, Monday to Friday, with an on-call component.

Joining Customs

To join Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident*.  Due to the nature of Customs' work all candidates must have a clear Police record.  Security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs before job offers are made; due to the nature of this work, the successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain organisational clearance.  Successful applicants are also required to pass a drug test and medical assessment, they must also hold a full driver licence.

(*) You need to have continuously resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years, or in one or more of the following countries: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom or United States.  You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.
