Job Description

Make your contribution as a Senior Solicitor/Poutoko Ture Matamua in the Treasury Legal Team

  • Work on a range of interesting issues sitting at the heart of Government
  • Be part of a supportive, enthusiastic and high performing team
  • Join us in our newly built future-focused CBD workplace

The Treasury is the New Zealand Government's lead economic and financial advisor. Our vision is to be a world-leading Treasury working towards higher living standards for New Zealanders.

As one of the New Zealand Government's three central agencies (which also includes the State Services Commission and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet), the Treasury provides leadership, context and direction to public sector agencies.

Our Legal team supports the Treasury by providing legal advice on a wide range of issues to effectively manage legal risk and implement projects.  Due to one of our valued team members heading overseas, we have a fantastic opportunity available for a Senior Solicitor/Poutoko Ture Matamua to join our team on a permanent basis.

As a Senior Solicitor/Poutoko Ture Matāmua, you will provide advice on a wide range of legal issues across the Treasury, drawing on either your public or commercial law background or your experience as an in-house lawyer.  You will have the opportunity to be involved in legislative work (including statutory interpretation and the passage of new legislation); machinery of government matters (including the creation of new entities); questions relating to the Crown's commercial portfolio and lending programme; bona vacantia and unclaimed money enquiries; and a range of internal processes and policies.

The Treasury's Legal team advises on a wide range of public and commercial law issues and is often operating in the overlap between the two.  You are not expected to be an expert in both public and commercial law, but the successful candidate will show a willingness to learn and to get involved in a variety of work.  While a background in banking and finance law is not essential, having an interest in supporting New Zealand Debt Management and New Zealand Export Credit would be an advantage.

In addition, we are looking for someone with:

  • A strong focus on client service and solutions
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to develop excellent working relationships
  • Approximately seven years' or more experience as a practicing solicitor
  • Experience in commercial and/or public law and/or ICT law
  • Experience in banking and finance law would be an advantage
  • The capacity to offer timely, practical and quality legal advice

We can offer you an opportunity to:

  • Work in an interesting and stimulating work environment
  • Interact with a wide range of people in the Treasury and other departments
  • Gain career advancement and personal development
  • Contribute to a diverse range of projects
  • Work closely with the Treasury's external legal advisers, including Crown Law
  • Make a difference to the lives of New Zealanders

We pride ourselves on the quality of our staff and understand the importance of fostering a working environment where excellence is recognised and where staff are encouraged to develop their own talents and potential. The Treasury values diversity amongst its employees and please talk to us about flexible work options.

Applications close Tuesday 30 April 2019. All applications must be made online.

Please see the attached Job Description for further details and for more information please contact Gina Butson, Deputy Treasury Solicitor/Manager, Legal (Gina.Butson@treasury.govt.nz).
