At Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa, our vision is to unleash the power of data to change lives.  As New Zealand s official data and statistics agency, we are tasked with leading the way for New Zealand s data future, enabling data-led innovation across society, the economy, and the environment.

The purpose of the role

Stats NZ s Integrated Data Infrasturcture is a critical tool in the government s efforts to reduce poverty, improve health, and provide a growing, inclusive economy. It enables researchers to gain evidence-based insights, and to measure the effectiveness of government initiatives and services. See this link to a video explaining what we do.  

We are redeveloping the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) production processes to enable continued growth and stability in our service. This is being done through our IDI2 project as part of a wider programme of improvements to our services.  

Initially focusing on the IDI2 project, the Product Owner role will:

  • Be the voice of internal and external IDI users
  • Work closely with branch Management to shape and own the IDI2 vision, strategy and roadmap.
  • Work closely with IDI2 Project Management team on day-to-day running of the project
  • Define priorities and business cases for building IDI2
  • Promote the project benefits and making the case for further investment
  • Work closely with other relevant Product Owners (e.g. Data Hub)

 Person specifications

To succeed in this role you will:

  • Have proven relevant experience in a Product Owner role working in a complex agile environment.
  • Have a high level of technical credibility in the modern data and technology space.
  • Have an understanding of data management, including privacy  and security mangement.
  • Have great communication and relationship management skills - able to balance stakeholder priorities and keep everyone in the loop.
