  • to lead a wide range of social development policy and cross government projects

We are seeking a motivated Senior Policy Analyst to join the Disability, Children and Youth Policy team here at MSD.

Our team works across a broad range of cross-cutting, and cross agency social policy issues. You will have the opportunity to work on exciting projects including alternatives to minimum wage exemptions, improving accessibility, and giving people a greater voice in policy development.

There is a great vibe across the team and the branch. People are focused on delivering high quality policy advice in a fun, supportive environment.  We work hard to ensure policy settings are responsive to the diverse needs and wellbeing of New Zealanders while maintaining a strong focus on staff wellbeing and personal work/life balance. We pride ourselves on investing in developing and supporting staff to reach their full potential.

What you will be doing

We are looking for someone to lead the next stage of development of alternatives to minimum wage exemptions following our recent consultation. In addition, there are a range of other significant policy projects on our work programme and you will have the opportunity to be deployed onto these depending on the priorities and your skill set.

As a Senior Policy Analyst you will have opportunities to expand your policy capabilities by leading on significant policy projects.  You will be supported to further develop your strategic agility across a wide range of issues and take on thought leadership roles by applying your analytical, critical thinking and relationship building skills.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in a Senior Policy Analyst role, you will need to demonstrate:

  • extensive policy analysis experience at a senior level in central government
  • well-developed analytical, critical thinking and judgment skills
  • application of effective relationship management skills
  • excellent oral and written communication, with demonstrated ability to provide clear concise written advice
  • experience in policy project management and leadership, with an ability to see the big picture and strategic opportunities
  • skills and interest to coach & develop others
  • ability to work under  tight timelines and provide quality advice

Benefits of working in Policy at MSD

  • We are a large organisation with policies and services that support most New Zealanders at some point in their life – from Child Care Assistance to Superannuation
  • We work collaboratively with the service delivery groups of our ministry, to ensure fit for purpose policies – you can see the policies you've developed right through to operational implementation
  • Our practice is guided by a foundation of shared cultural behaviours  which has embedded a positive and supportive working environment
  • We have a new strategic direction – Te Pae Tawhiti – that sets out a strong vision and purpose for MSD
  • We are committed to building diversity, accessibility and inclusion in our workplace.  We can offer flexible working arrangements.
