Job Description

  • Would you like to lead a team to uncover new data sources, using these to build a richer picture of New Zealand's primary sector land use, production, and profitability?
  • Are you interested in developing data links to inform and influence decision makers?
  • Are you driven and curious, while looking to make your mark in a major organisation?

About MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries is working to grow and protect New Zealand, with an ambition for New Zealand to be the most trusted source of high-value natural products in the world.  A key component of the government's economic strategy is for our goods to be sustainably produced.  To achieve these objectives, MPI is working to support farmers in the sustainable and profitable use of their land.

We aim to empower farmers to become more resilient and improve the sustainability of their land management practices in the face of current and future challenges and opportunities such as: Mycoplasma bovis and other biosecurity risks; environmental performance; emerging consumer trends; and climate change.

About our team

Through the latest budget announcement, the Government has confirmed its commitment to helping New Zealand's farmers and growers produce sustainable, high quality products while remaining profitable and ensuring the longevity of our natural resources.

The Economic Data and Analysis team plays a key role in this by improving and providing accurate and useful farm benchmarking data across physical, financial, and environmental measures. We are partnering with key industry stakeholders to improve the quality and relevance of underlying data so that our primary sectors can make informed decisions around the transition to a productive, sustainable, low-emissions future. In addition we are working across multiple agencies to create an information source for our farmers and growers that helps kick-start land-use decisions through merging biophysical, environmental, and economic factors.

We need someone who is up to the challenge of managing multiple work streams in the sustainable land use space and enjoys getting the best out of people. You will be passionate about making data useful for our primary sectors and can see opportunities where others see problems. This is a great opportunity to manage a small team in delivering high profile work that will directly contribute to improving farmers and growers' ability to thrive in a more environmentally conscious future.

What we are looking for

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Tertiary qualified with a degree in economics, commerce or a similar field (e.g. accounting or finance);
  • Driven to lead challenging work and develop staff capabilities;
  • Great at building relationships with people of all types of backgrounds and seniority;
  • Passionate about our primary industries; and
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by our farmers and growers.
