Job Description

Ministry for the Environment

Here at the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) we love innovation, and we love to do things differently.  We value our people and have created an agile work environment to help us mobilise our workforce to address the critical issues that need resolving.  Our people are from diverse backgrounds and work in flexible ways, but are all committed to our responsibility as primary advisors to the Government on the environment.

We tackle the hottest issues that impact on the environment, supporting New Zealand's prosperity – economic, social and cultural, without compromising our environment for future generations.

The Ministry's goal to make Aotearoa New Zealand the most liveable place in the world is a considerable responsibility and one we take seriously.

We have some exciting opportunities to join some of New Zealand's hottest policy and operational teams. We are looking for Senior Analysts / Senior Policy Analysts with a wide range of experience to become part of our team in the roles below:

Climate Change – we are looking for someone who can join the climate change team to be involved in international negotiations and processes on climate change as well as our domestic policy work. They will work closely with others at the Ministry and colleagues at other agencies, particularly MFAT. The role will involve some international travel. It is an exciting opportunity to work across multiple areas and with an international focus.

The ideal candidate will have strong policy experience, a good understanding of international relations and processes, an ability to work across agencies, and ideally some understanding of the international context on climate change.

Climate Change – we are looking for someone to take over the role of lead compiler of New Zealand's greenhouse gas inventory. This is a critical role that underpins the climate change work of the Ministry for the Environment and ensures we meet our international obligations on climate change. The successful candidate will be the UNFCCC* Inventory Focal Point for the New Zealand Government. They will work closely with others at the Ministry and colleagues at other agencies to deliver this essential product every year.

*United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

The ideal candidate will have fantastic project and process management skills, a great attention to detail, and the ability to work closely with others and oversee a multi-disciplinary workstream. They will be highly organised, numerically literate and adept at communicating complex ideas succinctly. The following skills are desirable but not essential: a background in greenhouse gas inventories/accounting, and an understanding of international climate change processes.

Climate Change – we are looking for someone fixed term (12 months) who can join the climate change team to be involved in general climate policy development and implementation, with a focus on adaptation and resilience.  They will work collaboratively across central and local government.

The ideal candidate will have strong policy experience, a good understanding of climate change mitigation and adaptation, and an ability to work across agencies.
