Job Description

What you will do
As an agile leader joining us as we embark on new ways of working, this is a rare, exciting and multifaceted role that will allow you to demonstrate your leadership skills, business acumen, strategic thinking and technical execution. It also provides you with an opportunity to be part of an organisation that is fundamentally changing the way it operates.
The Mission and Intelligence Capability sits within our Communication and Information Systems (CIS) Branch and is tasked with delivering and ensuring that command and control, and intelligence systems support is fully established.
As the Deputy Director Mission & Intelligence, you will be responsible for setting the strategic direction and maintaining oversight of the portfolio's people, practice and operations, ensuring all areas of M&I are enabled to effectively deliver their core functions. You will have the unique opportunity to build a new team, positioning this portfolio strategically and practically, partnering with a diverse range of stakeholders across NZDF.

This is a 2 year fixed term opportunity and we expect to appoint around $145k - $155k for this role which is inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation contribution. This may be negotiable depending on experience.

What we need
The successful candidate will have an extensive background in people leadership positions within large complex operational environments. You will be future-oriented and have a proven capability in remaining abreast of current market offerings with a view to implement efficient and effective system interoperability.
Defence Force experience from within NZ or other 5 eyes countries is strongly preferred or you will have previous experience in military deployments, with demonstrable experience in designing, implementing and managing solutions across a wide range of technologies within specific constraints.
When applying please focus on highlighting your specific experience with:
  • Strategic thinking and planning, risk management, people management and leadership;
  • Creating, leading and managing teams (50+ employees);
  • Supporting ICT delivery within an organisation of similar size and scope;
  • Delivering service excellence and continuous improvement;
  • Working in flexible team environments and adapting ways of working;
  • Delivering business operations management functions; and
  • Supporting continual improvement activities, with a learning mind-set.
Who we are
CIS Branch provides the core information and communication services that underpin New Zealand Defence operations.  We are entrusted to deliver and support the Defence technology that helps keep New Zealanders safe.
Let's just say we're not your typical corporate IT department:
  • We provide support to more than 14,000 military and civilian Defence Force personnel who are dispersed on seven continents, often in geographically remote, hostile environments;
  • Our solutions are deployed to personal devices, vehicles, ships and planes; and
  • We're here to deliver military outcomes, not just the technology behind them.
Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force contributes to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.
Why Us

NZDF has a unique culture that is underpinned by our shared values of courage, commitment, comradeship and integrity. From day one you are part of a community that prides itself in protecting our country, giving you real purpose. In addition you will be given access to:
  • First class technology;
  • Coaching;
  • Flexible working arrangements;
  • Trust to make a meaningful difference.
We are extremely proud of this and the great benefits for you and your family when you join NZDF!
Please note: This role will initially be based in Petone however; we are currently working through our longer-term office location requirements in the broader Wellington area. This means that in future you may need to be able to work in one of our other CIS offices across the Wellington and Hutt Valley region.
You must be able and willing to travel within New Zealand and overseas if required.

Higher level Security Clearance
