Job Description

  • Do you have a passion for protecting New Zealand's environment and our way of life?
  • Are you a natural collaborator and problem solver?
  • Make this unique role your own

We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated Senior Adviser to join our Recovery and Pest Management Group, part of Biosecurity New Zealand which is responsible for leading biosecurity at our borders and within New Zealand.

The Recovery and Pest Management Group provides leadership for the pest management part of the biosecurity system, and works in partnership with a wide range of organisations across New Zealand to reduce the spread and impact of established pests.

About the role

  • The Senior Adviser Conservation position provides a focal point for sharing information and supporting collaborative approaches with our partners, including the Department of Conservation, Ministry for the Environment, regional councils, and Maori.
  • In this role you will work with the Principal Adviser Conservation and others across the Ministry to ensure that responses to new biosecurity threats, and programmes to manage established pests, support biodiversity and conservation values.
  • You will help to maintain a high profile for conservation and biodiversity values across the biosecurity system, support continuous system improvement, and ensure issues are managed in a coordinated way.
  • You will have the ability to proactively build and maintain constructive partnership based relationships, coupled with excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • You will be able to analyse complex and technical issues, and articulate these to a range of audiences. Ideally you will have experience facilitating collaborative processes and leading partnership based programmes.

Key focus areas for this role include:

  • Maintaining a strong working relationship, and coordinating operational and policy activities, with the Department of Conservation and other agencies (domestic and international) that have conservation or indigenous biodiversity roles
  • Providing biosecurity system oversight from a conservation perspective
  • Supporting the delivery of biosecurity responses and long term management programmes for conservation threats, and ensuring appropriate prioritisation and momentum
  • Designing and leading system improvement projects.

You will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in ecological science, or a related discipline
  • Professional experience in a biosecurity or conservation sector role
  • A proven track record of working with diverse groups of stakeholders and being customer focussed
  • An ability to engage confidently with technical specialists and provide advice to Ministers and senior managers.
  • Experience in strategy development and leading work programmes and projects

We offer a varied, fast moving environment, and the opportunity to develop new skills and expertise as part of a passionate and committed team. You will be supported and guided in the role by the Principal Adviser Conservation.

Benefits of working at MPI:

  • Brand new offices close to Railway Station
  • Up to three additional (MPI holidays) leave days
  • Career development and internal opportunities across the branch and organisation
  • Wellness benefit for employees
  • Reduced premiums for Group Healthcare Schemes
  • Comprehension one-week MPI Induction Programme
  • Parental leave ex-gratia payment
  • Workstation assessment

Salary range for this role is $82k to $107k depending on skills and experience
