About MPI

The Policy & Trade Branch provides strategic thinking, policy advice and analysis, negotiates market access arrangements and oversees international government-to-government relationships, to maximise export opportunities across New Zealand's primary sector and inform decisions.  

About the team

Forestry policy is a new team in the Policy and Trade branch established to help lead the emerging strategic policy direction for forestry and wood processing to support a sustainable low emissions future for New Zealand and contribute to the Government's social, economic and environmental outcomes. It has a particular focus on advice on the effective design and implementation of policy for wood processing. The team works closely with the One Billion Trees policy team and Te Uru Rākau (Forestry New Zealand), and supports the Forestry Ministerial Advisory Group.

About the role

The Forestry Policy Manager will manage a team of highly capable analysts to deliver high quality advice, and contribute to the leadership of the Data, Insights and Forestry Directorate.  The role will also involve building and maintaining relationships across MPI, engaging with Ministers and senior leaders and communicating with key stakeholders. 

About you

You will be an enthusiastic and motivated individual who brings excellent initiative and judgement to the role. Your skills and experience will include:

  • sound policy experience and the ability to deliver high quality policy work in a fast-paced environment
  • an aptitude for working with ambiguity, translating policy objectives into practical, actionable steps and following through
  • excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • the ability to present information and ideas effectively and engagingly to a wide range of audiences
  • an excellent ability to build and maintain relationships, both internally and externally.
  • the ability to motivate and lead a team, and develop talent
