The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) currently has four new vacancies for Team Leaders.  These exciting new opportunities are a chance to be part of the growing Food Compliance Services Team at MPI where you can use your unique blend of managerial, technical and personal skills in a sector crucial to New Zealand's national interests

As a Team Leader, you will be responsible for managing a small team of up to six Food Compliance Officers, in the Food Compliance North or Central/South teams.  You will be working with members of the public and the food industry to resolve a range of food sector related issues, as well as responding to food incidents and emergencies, implementing enforcement action and supporting decisions for prosecution.

There is some flexibility with location across New Zealand and we are looking for people who can live and work at any of the following locations; Auckland, Hamilton/Tauranga/Napier, Palmerston North/Petone/Nelson, and Christchurch/Dunedin.

To be successful in this role you will need to:

  • Have proven leadership and people management skills
  • Become warranted as a Food Safety Officer and other applicable warrants of authority e.g. Animal Products Act and Wine Act
  • Have practical working knowledge of the laws under which investigations and compliance activities operate
  • Lead by example to apply system thinking, along with analytical skills, to proactively identify areas of non-compliance
  • Build and sustain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Support Officers to prepare and present robust court prosecution cases where significant non-compliance is identified

If you are passionate about food safety, comfortable in dealing with both industry and the public and looking for a leadership role, we want to hear from you.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven ability to make timely decisions with incomplete information under tight deadlines and pressure
  • Excellent judgement and analytical skills, with a particular application in a regulatory, compliance and enforcement environment
  • Proven ability to make decisions on the most appropriate interventions to ensure the desired outcomes are obtained
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Experience in the development and implementation of compliance and risk management strategies, plans, policies and procedures
  • Experience in developing and maintaining relationships and consultations with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders

  • Tertiary qualifications in food science, environmental/public health or relevant science disciplines and/or equivalent regulatory, compliance and enforcement experience
  • Management based qualification or relevant experience is an advantage

If you are successful, you will be expected to attend and successfully complete a comprehensive residential training course of up to four weeks. Willingness to travel within New Zealand is required. The role covers both management and enforcement, requiring maturity and resilience but can provide real satisfaction within a supportive and inclusive workforce.
