The Department of Conservation's (DOC's) vision is for New Zealand to be the greatest living space on Earth. It grapples with issues as challenging as maintaining our unique biodiversity and providing for the increasing number of tourists coming to visit our beautiful places.

Reporting to the Deputy Director General Corporate Services leading a substantial finance team, both locally and remotely. The position will be responsible for the management of the organisation's finance function, instilling a culture of high performance in the delivery of a robust financial service to the business.


  • To be successful in this role, you will be technically proficient ensuring the department is compliant from an accounting perspective with regard to both IFRS and the Public Finance Act.
  • Your outstanding relationship management skills and ability to influence will see the organisation improving its financial controls and ability to build better business cases.
  • You will play a critical leadership role being responsible for the entire finance function as well as being a core member of the audit and risk committee. 
  • With high level organisational and project management skills, you will effectively select and implement a new finance management system, from business case, to roll out.
  • This role will ideally suit an experienced public sector CFO or Deputy CFO, (as public sector experience is a must), who has solid technical skills, a good level of EQ and the ability to challenge the business on a range of issues.
