Job Description

Legal and Research Advisor, Judicial and Business Services (12-months fixed term), Auckland

The Ministry of Justice provides a range of justice services around New Zealand. We have more than 3000 people working across 120 locations around the country, all working towards our vision of a safe and just New Zealand.

We are currently seeking an experienced and proactive individual to join our Legal and Research Advisor team.

This is a role where your enthusiasm and initiative will be key in providing timely, robust and accurate legal support to the Legal Complaints Review Office. You will be working in a tight-knit team at the decision-making front line, and will have the opportunity to work with, and learn from, decision makers monitoring the ethical direction of the legal profession.

About the role:

Your day-to-day work will be varied and busy. You will work closely with Review Officers to manage files, prepare case books for hearings, and draft decision backgrounds. You will research New Zealand law, discuss your legal opinion, and wrestle with the pitfalls of legal practice. You will mix theory with practical application, and gain insight into the regulatory regime governing the conduct of the legal profession. Your keen eye for detail will aid you in reviewing legal documents, and your initiative will be key in making this role a success.

Your immediate colleagues will be decision makers, fellow legal and research advisors, registry staff and management, all working to contribute to the decision-making process. This role is a unique opportunity to think big, work hard, and make a difference alongside your colleagues in the Legal and Research Advisor team supporting New Zealand's tribunals.

Skills and experience required:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • excellent interpersonal skills
  • fantastic time management skills
  • great spelling, grammar and attention to detail
  • sound knowledge of legal ethics and the professional conduct regulatory regime
  • an intellectually curious outlook
  • a Bachelor of Laws degree
  • three or more years' relevant experience (including drafting) preferred.

This is a 12-month fixed-term, full-time role based in Auckland. The salary range for the role is $61,132–$86,303.
