Job Description

We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a highly skilled Principal Advisor to join our Tax Strategy team.

  • Do you have a passion for shaping the future of public policy in New Zealand?
  • Are you an experienced policy advisor with specific expertise in tax?
  • Do you have strategic leadership skills and a curious mind?

The Treasury is the New Zealand Government's lead economic and financial advisor. Our vision is to raise living standards for New Zealanders.  We're at the heart of decision making and are involved in amazing conversations.

The Tax Strategy team provides tax policy advice to the Minister of Finance.  Working together with Inland Revenue, we also deliver the Government's Tax Policy Work Programme, for which the Ministers of Finance and Revenue have joint responsibility.

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Provide intellectual leadership on strategic tax policy. This can extend into non-tax areas of relatively high complexity, ambiguity, and sensitivity.
  • Advise Ministers on potential domestic and international tax policy changes
  • Help to lead a research programme focused on the future direction of the tax system
  • Work closely with senior officials on a wide range of issues, engaging with teams across the Treasury, Inland Revenue, other departments and external stakeholders
  • Represent the Treasury in domestic and international forums

The Principal Advisor role does not have line management responsibility. However, you will be responsible for the delivery of programmes of work and expected to help support the work and development of other members of the team.

You will bring:

  • Extensive tax technical expertise and ideally substantial experience in tax policy and economics
  • Excellent analytical and strategic thinking skills
  • Highly-developed communication, influencing and relationship management skills
  • An organised, proactive mind-set, with an orientation towards taking initiative and ownership for your work
  • Experience leading people, complex projects, or policy processes; and a demonstrated ability in supporting, mentoring and developing others

In return we can offer:

  • The opportunity to influence policy at the highest levels
  • An energetic and collaborative work environment in a high-performing team where you will interact with a wide range of people and external stakeholders
  • A commitment to providing work and training opportunities that support your development and career aspirations

At the Treasury, we pride ourselves on the quality of our staff and understand the importance of a work environment where people are encouraged to develop their own talents and potential. We value diversity among our employees and encourage a positive work/non-work balance with flexible work arrangements.

Applications close Wednesday, 28 August.  All applications must be made online.
