Job Description

  • Are you ready to take on the challenges facing our cities and the environment?
  • Are you enthusiastic and committed to making a difference through robust policy advice?

At the Ministry for the Environment our purpose is to make New Zealand the most liveable place in the world for our children, their children and their mokopuna. ‘Liveable' in an MfE context puts New Zealanders at the heart of our work, recognising a thriving environment underpins economic prosperity.  Our strategy takes us to the cutting edge of how policy is made and how we partner with external organisations - building on our strengths to deliver enhanced performance.

On July 24, the Government announced a comprehensive review of the resource management system. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to play a major role in reforming some of our most important legislation. We are seeking high performing Principal Analysts to join the team to support the Resource Management Review Panel and the Minister for the Environment with quality, timely and effective advice.

While you will not have direct reports, you will mentor and lead other staff, working alongside managers, directors and the Ministry's executive leadership to help achieve the review. We have a collaborative working environment, so you must be comfortable using and building from others' expertise - both within and external to the Ministry.

You will be passionate about improving environmental outcomes and enabling better and timely urban development, and will have a deep understanding of how to achieve this through legislative changes.

Our preferred Principal Analysts will have:

  • Proven ability to lead collaborative, complex, multidisciplinary projects.
  • A technical and practical understanding of New Zealand's resource management system, particularly the Resource Management Act.
  • Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills.
  • An understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, te ao Māori and experience engaging with Māori/iwi.
  • A high level of understanding and direct experience of working effectively with government processes, systems and tools.
  • Experience in developing and implementing workable solutions to ambiguous and complex problems.
  • Experience leading people in the completion of project work.
  • Sound judgement and awareness of the context within which advice is formulated and communicated.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills to connect effectively with key stakeholder relationships and explain complex issues clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of research, evidence and analysis methods, including emerging and innovative approaches and frameworks, and extensive experience in working with a range of methods.
  • A respected reputation as a policy leader in their field.

These are full time, permanent roles based in Wellington or Auckland.  The Ministry actively supports flexible working.
