Job Description

What you will do

In this role you will become a member of the Defence Estate & Infrastructure (DEI) Environment Services (ES) team.  This team, is responsible for ensuring that development and management of the Defence estate complies with all resource consents, relevant legislation and policy, mitigates environmental risk and integrates environmental best practice into construction and development activities.

This fixed term role has been established specifically to support major redevelopment projects and activities with the main focus being the Air Surveillance and Maritime Patrol (ASMP) capability at RNZAF Base Ohakea.  This is a technical role where you will be a key playing in the environmental work related to the ongoing use, regeneration and transformation of the Defence Estate (specifically Ohakea).

Typically a day in this role will involve programme/project management, providing advice and working with NZ Defence Force personnel, the internal and external ASMP programme/project teams, engaging and liaising with internal and external stakeholders (including local and regional councils, Iwi, etc), contracting and managing specialist contractors, environmental compliance and  reporting.

This is a very busy role in which you will become an integral part of the Environmental Services team. The team are supportive and are like-minded professionals who are passionate about the work they do.

What we need

We are seeking a person with extensive experience in environmental, resource management, environmental engineering and/or planning within a diverse organisation.  You will have exceptional organisation skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks with conflicting priorities.  As already mentioned this is a busy role and on occasion it can be reactive, therefore, sometimes it will be a case of rolling up your sleeves and helping out.  A ‘can do' attitude is vital.

In terms of experience we are ideally looking for an ‘all rounder' or environmental generalist.  If you are a person who has experience working across a wide portfolio of environmental projects then this role will suit you.

As an environmental professional you will have a good appreciation and understanding of natural eco-systems, environment management and compliance systems.  This aligns with extensive working knowledge and experience in relation to New Zealand's environmental legislation, environmental management systems and associated environmental matters including areas like earthworks and sediment control, three waters management, contaminated land, biosecurity, ecology, heritage and sustainability (e.g. waste management).

You will have a good understanding of the structure and operation of both local and regional councils.  Your outstanding communication and relationship skills, coupled with your ability to deal with complex issues and apply problem solving techniques, will facilitate your success in this position.

You love what you do and will bring energy, self-motivation and flexibility to this role.  In return you are offered the opportunity to work across a diverse range of environmental issues in a complex and interesting environment.

There is a requirement to travel around New Zealand in this role, in particular between NZDF Headquarters in Wellington and Ohakea/Linton in the Manawatu, therefore can be based in Central NZ or Wellington.

This is a fixed term role with an expiry date of 30 June 2022.
