Senior Advisor - Secondary Tertiary

Wellington - Permanent, Full Time

 About our Group

The Secondary Tertiary team sits within the Early Learning and Student Achievement Group (ELSA) and covers the transition from senior secondary through to tertiary and employment.

ELSA works to make learning and teaching relevant, real and valued. We deliver and maintain critical services for the education sector to support responsive learner pathways from early childhood into further education, training, the workforce and society.  ELSA performs a crucial role working between the strategy and policy teams, and the sector facing functions.

The Secondary Tertiary team is responsible for operational policy, curriculum and support programmes for Year 11-13 learners, with a focus on the secondary-tertiary interface. This includes senior secondary curriculum, the School Leavers' Toolkit, NCEA (including the ongoing NCEA Review and preparing for the Review of Achievement Standards) and secondary-tertiary programmes.

Senior Advisor role

The Senior Advisor contributes to designing and developing curriculum, teaching and learning initiatives for senior secondary education to support a smooth transition to further education and the world of work. They provide savvy advice on implementing policy, from design through to implementation, and on the design and delivery of curriculum and assessment content. They ensure a deliberate focus on student achievement is maintained by providing thought leadership and guidance in senior secondary education.

About the person

We are looking for someone who is thoughtful, agile and adept at handling ambiguity and complexity. Our ideal candidate will take pride in producing high quality work, and will be comfortable working independently to achieve defined objectives.  The person will be sensitive to cultural values and have a good understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

They will have sharp interpersonal skills, superior. writing skills, and will be comfortable working with a diverse range of stakeholders and representing the Ministry. 

Experience and qualifications

This role does not have qualification requirements, but it would be useful if candidates had:

  • A tertiary qualification in education, or in a field which privileges critical thinking and clear communication
  • Secondary teaching experience or experience in policy, operational policy, change and implementation, curriculum / service design or education in general.
