The Refugee Status Branch is looking for a Technical Advisor to provide advice to refugee and protection officers and others in the Branch on refugee law and the processing of refugee status matters.  The role involves undertaking second person checks on refugee determinations, coaching and training, and managing a personal caseload.  The Technical Advisor is responsible for ensuring quality decisions that uphold New Zealand's international commitments.

 

The ideal applicant will have a history of making quality refugee and immigration decisions and:

  • In depth knowledge of the Refugee Convention and New Zealand and international refugee and related law
  • Advanced knowledge of refugee status determination procedures
  • Experience in deciding refugee claims and making other refugee related determinations
  • A demonstrated high standard of analytical skills and written work
  • Excellent workflow management practices
  • Proven experience and results with effective coaching, mentoring and training staff

Ideally you would have a tertiary qualification, preferably in law or the humanities, or extensive and comparable relevant experience.
