About Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities

Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities brings together the three existing agencies of Housing New Zealand, HLC and KiwiBuild to form a new organisation.

Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities is central to the Government's aspirations for housing and urban development. It will work across the housing spectrum to build thriving communities where everyone has a place to call home.

This new organisation will have two key roles: being a public housing landlord, and partnering with the development community, iwi, and local and central government to deliver urban development projects of all sizes.

The anticipated start date for this new organisation is 1st October 2019.

The role

Our vision is 'Building lives and communities by housing New Zealanders.' To help us achieve this, we are currently recruiting for a Principal Advisor - Operations to provide strategic advice to the National Operations Manager, Chief Operating Officer and the wider People and Property teams.

The role will be responsible for challenging operational and strategic thinking within the Group, and assisting with improving the overall performance and response to challenging issues. The position has an influential role in ensuring strategy and business improvement is delivered with optimal results meeting HNZ's strategic objectives.

The incumbent will be responsible for identifying opportunities for improvement, and delivering nationwide change and best practise across the group. They will also work collaboratively with other teams across Housing New Zealand to develop an integrated response to core strategic and shared operational priorities.

This is an integral role for the People and Property team, working across a number of other groups and agencies, and will be responsible for representing the interests of People and Property at a national level. This will ensure the voice of the business is heard and reflected in key business or agency decisions.

The Principal Advisor - Operations will inform good decision-making and fit-for-purpose business solutions. They will lead and support the transition of solutions and ministerial-directed, cross-agency work into the business. The position will drive and deliver enhanced processes and systems and overall business improvement.

What you'll need to bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, such as business administration, project management or strategic planning
  • Demonstrated aptitude in business planning, monitoring and reporting, preferably in a leadership capacity
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to communicate with technical and non-technical people, taking due account of the context and adapting to audience
  • Proven ability and experience in developing and maintaining relationships and working effectively with staff at all levels of the organisation
  • An understanding of Government Accountability and official information processes is desirable
