  • Be part of a wide range of social development policy projects including income support, seniors' policy (including retirement income policy), the welfare system, housing and employment related social assistance and support for service delivery.

The opportunity

We are looking for an experienced and passionate General Manager to join our busy Policy team at MSD.

The General Manager, Policy will provide leadership and management of their designated Policy group and manage and monitor the quality of policy analysis and advice delivered. The General Manager will work closely with colleagues in the Policy Group and others within the Ministry to ensure that we are providing great advice, that strategies and policies align with Government policy objectives, and reflect operational needs. Effective policy advice will depend on good relationships with other General Managers and their teams across the Ministry.

There is a great vibe across the branch where people are focused on delivering high quality policy advice in a fun, supportive team environment.  We work hard to ensure policy settings are responsive to the diverse needs and wellbeing of New Zealanders while maintaining a strong focus on staff wellbeing and personal work/life balance. We pride ourselves on investing in developing and supporting staff to reach their full potential.

To be successful in a General Manager role, you will need to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of Government and State Sector processes and systems
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience in acting in an advisory capacity to Ministerial parties, central agencies and a variety of business units
  • Sound knowledge of Government direction and policy priorities
  • Sound knowledge of social policy
  • Knowledge about the support and implementation of cross-sectoral key strategic approaches
  • An understanding of equity issues and the Treaty of Waitangi, and the implications of these for the work of MSD
  • An understanding of the public sector environment and the role, duties and expectations of public servants
  • A high level of technical and professional knowledge in job-related areas.
Benefits of working in Policy at MSD

  • We are a large organisation with policies and services that support most New Zealanders at some point in their life – from Child Care Assistance to Superannuation
  • We work collaboratively with the service delivery groups of our ministry, to ensure fit for purpose policies – you can see the policies you've developed right through to operational implementation
  • Our practice is guided by a foundation of shared cultural behaviours which has embedded a positive and supportive working environment
  • We have a new strategic direction – Te Pae Tawhiti – that sets out a strong vision and purpose for MSD
  • We are committed to building diversity, accessibility and inclusion in our workplace.  We can offer flexible working arrangements.
