Job Description

  • Do you have a passion for protecting New Zealand's marine environment?
  • Are you a strategic thinker who enjoys the challenge of developing practical solutions to real world problems
  • Are you looking for an opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues, central and local government, industry groups and communities to build joint strategic approaches to managing New Zealand's domestic marine biosecurity issues?

About our team:

  • The Long-Term Planning and Transition Team delivers an important programme of work aimed at transitioning issues from an acute response phase to a long-term management phase, as well as working on strategic opportunities to improve pest management in New Zealand.
  • The team sits within the Recovery and Pest Management Group that leads programmes to tackle the pest and disease challenges facing New Zealand.
  • The issues we lead on include: controlling Wilding Conifers (NZ's number one weed problem), eradicating some of the world's worst aquatic weeds that if left uncontrolled would smother our waterways, and stopping the spread of marine, freshwater and animal pests.

About the Role [Kōrero mō te tūranga]:

  • You will be required to create a practical collaboration between MPI, relevant Crown agencies, regional councils, Māori and other system participants to join up New Zealand's marine biosecurity and stop the marine pests already here from spreading.
  • You will also bring a high degree of enthusiasm and energy to the role. We are looking for a team player who will be able to forge strong working relationships across the public sector and beyond.

In return, we offer you the opportunity to work in a fast-paced and supportive team environment, contributing to the successful delivery of high-profile programmes.

Some domestic travel will be involved, and the role will be Wellington-based. We will consider secondments and flexible working arrangements for the right candidate.

About You [Mōu]:

Ideally you will have:

  • A proven record of working effectively across government agencies, industry groups, Māori, and other stakeholders, to drive a shared vision and develop effective solutions.
  • Understanding of the interface between strategy, policy development and on-ground delivery.
  • A broad range of communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to write to a high standard and in ways that engage the audience.
  • The ability to facilitate group discussions with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge of various legislation that protects our environmental and economic resources.
