Senior Analyst Research and Evaluation

Full Time, Permanent (37.55 hours per week)


We are expanding our research portfolio in areas such as health and disability, family and sexual violence, and longitudinal research. To support this, our Research and Evaluation Unit is seeking a Senior Analyst to help deliver on our diverse and exciting work programme.


Our work programme spans the Ministry's sector, policy and service delivery priorities. We take a broad approach to the development of evidence and advice, incorporating quantitative and qualitative methods, and a variety of products to support our clients' decisions.


Our work programme uses research and evaluation to inform decision-making in areas of critical importance to New Zealander's wellbeing.

  • Supporting the evidence needs of the Welfare Expert Advisory Group
  • Developing frameworks and evidence to support the prevention of family violence
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of MSD's programmes
  • Progressing individual and whanau research 
  • Supporting strategic, policy and service delivery decisions with evidence about young people, older people, and people with health and disability issues.


In this role you will have a specific focus on:
  • Engaging with our policy and service delivery colleagues to determine their research and evaluation priorities
  • Working with stakeholders to understand their evidence needs and data requirements
  • The ethical considerations of our research and evaluation work
  • Undertaking independent analysis, with input and support from others in the research and evaluation team and from our broader insights group
  • Contract management where elements of our work are delivered by professional research and evaluation practitioners
  • Advising stakeholders of our findings through workshops, presentations and the publication of our final reports.
About you

You are passionate about gathering evidence, crafting the narrative and delivering this in a way that makes sense to diverse audiences. This role will suit you if you are a specialist in at least one of the areas below:

  • Quantitative or qualitative research
  • Mixed methods research
  • IDI users
  • Kaupapa Māori expert
  • Programme Management with a Research and Evaluation background.
