Job Description

  • Join our Incursion Investigation (Animal Health) team based in Wallaceville, Upper Hutt Wellington

 

We are looking for a New Zealand-registered veterinarian to join the Biosecurity Surveillance and Incursion Investigation (Animal Health) Team. This is a permanent position within MPI's Diagnostic and Surveillance Services Directorate.

 

About the Role [Kōrero mō te tūranga]:

The AHL (Animal Health Laboratory) is New Zealand's reference laboratory for animal health and biosecurity, and provides the diagnostic services required to support the incursion investigation function. This role would suit a veterinarian with an interest in population-level disease investigation and knowledge of the livestock, companion animal and wildlife landscape of New Zealand. Post-graduate epidemiology (or pathology) training (or an explicit interest in working towards these) is desirable.

  • The team works within the Biosecurity New Zealand business unit and is tasked with the early and accurate detection of exotic, new and emerging pests and diseases.
  • Core functions are the operational aspects of the investigation, surveillance and early response functions, related to unwanted pests or diseases affecting animal biosecurity.
  • You will have primary responsibility for investigations to the point of diagnosis of suspect exotic, new and emerging pests and diseases of animals, including livestock, companion animals, bees and wildlife.
  • Involvement in surveillance and response programme work, including development of exotic disease investigation and surveillance capability, development of surveillance systems and exotic diseases readiness plans.
  • Technical advice encompasses response work associated with incursions of unwanted and new organisms, particularly focused on eradication and post eradication surveillance.
  • The Animal Health Incursion Investigation team are responsible for covering the after-hours Duty Investigator roster.

 The salary band for this role will range between $75k and $110k depending on skills and experience.

About You [Mōu]:

  • Eligibility to reside in New Zealand;
  • A veterinary degree registerable in New Zealand;
  • Minimum five years veterinary practice experience with a focus on large animals, ideally in New Zealand;
  • Veterinary skills across a range of disciplines including diagnostics, epidemiology, pathology and emergency management;
  • Motivation, initiative, flexibility, sound judgement and an aptitude for team work;
  • Good oral and written communication skills;
  • Preferably a post graduate qualification in epidemiology or pathology, although consideration will be given to veterinarians with the appropriate practice experience and a keen interest to develop these areas.
