Job Description

What you will do

We have an exciting opportunity for an accomplished Cyber Vulnerability Assessment Team Lead (TL) to join our growing security practise. The Defence Cyber Security Centre (DCSC) provides the core services to defend and assure the Defence Information Environment against ICS threats. The DCSC provides proactive monitoring and assessment of threats as well as ensuring efficient and effective response when required.

As the Vulnerability Assessment TL you will lead a team in building the Vulnerability Assessment function within the DCSC. The role will see you spend 70% of your time focussed on leading, mentoring and coaching a team of three.  The other 30% will see you hands-on, co-ordinating and directing all technical assessments of systems' security controls to support compliance with related policies and standards.

What we need

We are keen to hear from you if you are a naturally curious individual with a strong desire to lead a newly created team, be the “go to person”, solve problems and get results. In particular you'll have:

  •  Senior level experience gained in cyber security and/ or infrastructure audits roles in a large and complex IT environment;
  •  Demonstrated leadership experience gained in a similar role. This includes performance management, staff leave management, etc;
  •  Background in reviewing Cyber Security or information security policies, frameworks and standards;
  •  A good understanding of the available products, vulnerability assessment tools and IT auditing methodologies within the Cyber Security domain;
  •  Supportive of continual improvement activities, with a learning mind-set and the ability to adapt ways of working.

You possess not only the above mentioned knowledge but also a softer skillset to listen, empathise, explain, advise, influence and negotiate. Experience working within an Agile environment is highly desirable – or at least an understanding of Agile methodologies.

Who we are

CIS Branch provides the core information and communication services that underpin New Zealand Defence operations.  We are entrusted to deliver and support the Defence technology that helps keep New Zealanders safe.

Let's just say we're not your typical corporate IT department:

  • We provide support to more than 14,000 military and civilian Defence Force personnel who are dispersed on seven continents, often in geographically remote, hostile environments;
  • Our solutions are deployed to personal devices, vehicles, ships and planes; and
  • We're here to deliver military outcomes, not just the technology behind them.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force contributes to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

Why Us

NZDF has a unique culture that is underpinned by our shared values of courage, commitment, comradeship and integrity. From day one you are part of a community that prides itself in protecting our country, giving you real purpose. In addition you will be given access to:

  • First class technology;
  • Coaching;
  • Flexible working arrangements;
  • Trust to make a meaningful difference.

We are extremely proud of this and our benefits; check out the great benefits for you and your family when you join NZDF!

The NZDF is an inclusive organisation that is open to flexible working arrangements and welcomes applications from people regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, age, beliefs/opinions, or family circumstances.

We expect to appoint around the midpoint of the salary band for this role which is $105k - $115k inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation contribution. This may be negotiable depending on experience.

Please note: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand (NZ) and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance for the position applied for. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
