With the government s focus on better child poverty measures, a new Systems Administrator role has become available.


We are currently looking for a Fixed Term Systems Administrator to cover an internal secondment.


As a Systems Administrator, you will be responsible for supporting the ongoing collection of the various surveys that Stats NZ is responsible for. This involves supporting the field interviewers during their day to day work, supporting the back office staff with their configuration tasks, monitoring system effectiveness and looking for ways to improve our services.


A successful candidate will be able to:


Provide technical administration and leadership :

  • Provide accurate product knowledge to staff, clients and customers.
  • Maintain Collection Operations systems in accordance with established workflows
  • Customise and configure Collection Operations systems Assist in operational tasks as necessary

Provide technical liaison:

  • Provide technical liaison and support to other areas within Statistics NZ
  • Liaise with external suppliers and support services Represent Collection Operations at a technical level


Monitor, analyse and report:

  • Provide routine reports on systems performance
  • Produce ad hoc reports on request Analyse and comment on system reports

Contribute to building capability within Collection Operations:

  • Provide effective coaching and on-job training to ensure staff are integrated into the team and skilled up in relevant products, process and sector knowledge
  • Support initiatives to rotate staff through the branch to assist with the development of skills & knowledge across each Collection Operations discipline, across surveys and products, so that Collection Operations staff develop skills & knowledge across complete (end to end) project or product life cycles.

Contribute to building capability within  Collection Operations:

Support and participate in initiatives to rotate staff within Collection Operations and assist in the development of skills and knowledge across Collection Operations.

Contribute to risk mitigation and process improvement within Collection Operations:

Proactively identify business risks and opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit and the experience of respondents


Functional or role-specific technical competencies


  • Formal qualification is not specifically required, however, at least 2 years experience working in a similar role is essential.
  • Have or be able to quickly develop a broad understanding of hardware and software systems used in Collection Operations.
  • Have or quickly develop a broad understanding of the processing flows and priorities of Statistics NZ as a whole.
  • High level knowledge of communication systems.
  • Proven analytical and reporting skills.
  • Proficient use of MS Excel.
  • Use of SAS programming is preferred but not essential.
