We are seeking to recruit a senior or mid-level analyst into our Aquaculture & Fisheries Permitting team in the Fisheries Management Directorate.

About our team - Mō tō mātou rōpū

The Aquaculture & Fisheries Permitting Teamdevelops, delivers and manages applications and supporting processes across a range of regulatory tools in the marine and freshwater space. This includes marine and land-based aquaculture regulations, special permits and innovative trawl technology approvals.


About the role - Kōrero mō te tūranga

In this role you will have the opportunity to work across MPI, with other government agencies, with iwi and with a diverse range of stakeholders including fishers, fish farmers, researchers, environmental interests groups and local communities.


We offer you the opportunity to work in areas that contribute to help grow and protect the value of New Zealand's fisheries resources, and deliver on parts of the Crown's Treaty Settlement obligations.  This will provide exposure to key fisheries and aquaculture management and policy processes. We work in a fast-paced, stimulating environment dealing with high profile issues affecting the NZ economy and of high interest to tangata whenua and the public. The team often works on applications for innovative or novel ideas that have yet to be tested through regulation.


Skills and Experience - Ngā Pūkenga me ngā Wheako

  • A tertiary qualification in fisheries, or biological sciences, economics, law, resource management or a related discipline
  • Knowledge of fisheries & aquaculture legislation and issues in NZ
  • Knowledge of aquaculture and fishing practices and technologies
  • Strong degree of initiative and self-motivation, attention to detail and ability to manage several projects or pieces of work simultaneously
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills
  • Strong writing, analytical and problem solving skills
