Job Description

  • Set the foundations for high quality insights and best practice
  • Foster continuous improvement in the way we use data and research to inform MBIE's decision making
  • Support MBIE's organisational priorities with your research, evaluation and analytical advice and expertise

About the branch:

The Evidence and Insights branch was established in August 2018 and sits within the Corporate, Governance and Information Group (CGI). The Evidence and Insights branch is responsible for the full range of research, evaluation and data analysis functions across all of MBIE's areas of responsibility, providing the good quality evidence that MBIE requires to inform its decisions.

About the roles:

These two roles are in the Strategy and Stewardship team. The team's role is to make sure that the Evidence and Insights branch is well positioned to continue producing high quality products and services, and meet more complex and enduring needs in the future.

We are a multi-disciplinary team whose work covers four key themes:

  • Efficiency, capability and continuous improvement
  • Developing and implementing standards and processes
  • Advising and responding (eg, providing analytical and evaluation expertise for organisation-wide initiatives)
  • Building an Evidence Strategy, and exploring innovative approaches for complex and emerging topics

What you will bring to the role:

Are you looking for the opportunity to influence and lead best-practice across a group of evidence professionals?

Are you up for the challenge of asking and answering the tough questions about how the Evidence and Insights branch can improve how it shapes actionable evidence for decision making?

We are seeking analysts who have a passion for influencing and implementing best practice across teams and business units. This is an opportunity to stretch your skills on a much greater scale, if you have developed quality assurance frameworks and processes, and successfully implemented these in your team or organisation. Importantly, if you understand that ‘people' matter more for changing practice than either ‘technology' or ‘process', you will thrive in this role.

You will be an experienced practitioner with a wealth of experience in working with data and statistics, across a range of different subject areas and types of customers. You will have strong knowledge of data analytics tools, including R,, and can help lead initiatives to embed good practice and standards, and build capability now and for the future.

Why work for us:

MBIE is one of New Zealand's largest, most influential and most diverse public sector agencies.  This means that we are able to offer significant opportunities for developing experience across a broad variety of areas.

We aim to create a culture where our people are empowered to bring fresh ideas and perspectives and to develop new approaches.

We also take the time to foster a work environment that is enjoyable for all.  This means we like to collaborate, support and encourage our people, encourage excellence and innovation and take the time to have some fun and celebrate our successes.

Skills and Experience:

We are keen to hear from you if you have:

  • A proven track record of making quality improvements and lifting technical capability within or across teams
  • Exceptional teamwork, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative abilities and a willingness to share knowledge with others
  • A repertoire of skills for facilitating workshops, including co-design, process mapping (or value stream mapping), and/or investment logic mapping.
  • Excellent project planning and management skills
  • Broad experience conducting and leading analytics, research, and/or the production of official statistics
  • Confidence in using statistical software and programming languages such as R, and data manipulation and visualisation
  • A strong understanding of the machinery of government processes that underpin the operations of the public sector environment

Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or New Zealand permanent residents.
