Our litigation team is responsible for managing the Department's litigation portfolio. The team works closely with external legal counsel, providing support in the management of civil claims and coronial matters. The team also assesses and, where appropriate, negotiates the settlement of proposed claims. With a core focus on establishing and maintaining strategic relationships internally and externally, the work requires an ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders. As Legal Manager you will continue to apply your legal skills to some files but, primarily, your focus will be to lead a team of three staff members and, working closely with the Chief Legal Adviser and Crown Law, oversee the strategic management of the Department's litigation portfolio. You will oversee the provision of robust, high-quality advice in relation to complex claims. You'll also bring a strategic lens to the team's work, considering and proactively managing potential risks.

You'll be part of Legal Service's management team - ensuring Legal Services provides advice and support that enables Corrections to manage legal risk and make good, lawful decisions; and encouraging a team culture of partnership, trust and mutual respect.

You'll be a people person, who enjoys managing relationships and is committed to supporting your team to perform to the best of their abilities.

To be successful you'll be a qualified solicitor with significant experience working in both litigation and in government. In addition we're seeking:

  • Proven staff leadership experience
  • High level legal problem solving ability, which is practical and solutions focused
  • An ability to manage the Departments litigation portfolio
  • Exceptional relationship management skills
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills
  • An ability to identify potential risks and negotiate mutually acceptable solutions
