Job Description

The Team

The Ministry for Primary Industries newly established Extension Services team is looking for a self-starter to help shape advice that will deliver positive environmental, economic and social outcomes in New Zealand's regions.

The Extension Services team is responsible for delivery of practical advice, information and tools for farmers and growers to improve their operations on the ground.  One of the ways we will achieve this is by pulling together clusters of farmers and growers in different regions across the country, to share information, insights and advice with like-minded people who understand local issues.  This initiative sits in the wider Productive and Sustainable Land Use Programme.

About the role

The work will be diverse and provides an opportunity to make the job your own. To be successful you will need up to four years' experience in policy development or implementation.

This is an opportunity to work in a high profile, and often fast paced environment where things can change quickly.

We're looking for people who can:

  • show a good understanding of strategic and policy development, and implementation
  • take the lead, and deliver on specific projects
  • be flexible to the programme's changing needs

Skill & Experience

To be successful in this role you need to demonstrate you can:

  • Inform, support, and enable MPI and cross-government initiatives in primary sector extension services, taking the initiative to build relationships and progress work autonomously as required.
  • Work closely with colleagues across MPI to ensure that the strategies, policies, systems and processes relating to extension services are developed and implemented in a way that supports and enables MPI's policy objectives being developed.
  • Contribute to the development of extension service initiatives, including clear guidance on necessary departmental action, relevant timely and accurate advice to relevant Ministers, and reporting back on the effectiveness of the government's priorities and work programme.
  • Develop, and assist with developing ministerial correspondence.
  • Deliver specific pieces of work, on time and in scope.
  • Ensure effective external relationships across government agencies, sector groups and Māori by driving appropriate engagement.
