MPI provides policy and regulatory advice, market access and trade services, and manages major regulatory systems of biosecurity, food safety, forestry, fisheries management, and animal welfare. As part of the Agriculture and Investment Services Business Unit, the Regional Economic Development Directorate works to improve economic, environmental, and social outcomes for farmers, growers and their families.

We are working with regions to help them make the most of their competitive advantage – through growth opportunities in the primary sector. This means helping them to attract new investment, create jobs and skills and lift local incomes through agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, fisheries, horticulture and food and fibre processing.

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

You will lead a small team in Whangarei responsible for identifying and delivering primary sector development initiatives in Tai Tokerau/Northland.  The role presents an opportunity to make positive change in the region by increasing its economic activity, creating employment, and supporting local communities.  You and your team will manage MPI's programme of work in respect of Regional Economic Development (RED) in Tai Tokerau/Northland which includes, funding of local primary sector projects, establishing collaborative programmes in training and capacity building, and increasing the productive and sustainable use of agricultural land.  You will also be part of the RED Directorate management team and assist reporting to Ministers and the MPI senior leadership team.

Note: this role can be undertaken from Wellington or a Northland location, and we welcome applications from both regions.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Identifying new strategic initiatives to support MPI's programme of primary sector economic development.
  • Managing a busy work programme which supports the delivery of MPI's primary sector economic development strategy.
  • Providing leadership in MPI and across government in the context of the implementation of RED initiatives.
  • Providing clear guidance to the Minister for Primary Industries, on opportunities, risks, and progress towards the government's strategic priorities in Northland.
  • As part of the RED leadership team, you will be leading, developing and contributing to effective team engagement.

To be a success in this role you'll be seen a leader with experience influencing at senior level and be great at building and maintaining lasting partnerships. You will have experience working in or with government with a keen eye for detail which will allow you to understand and get to the heart of a problem quickly, but also provide satisfactory resolutions fast.

We are also looking for:

  • A strong track record of achievement of results.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, motivate, and lead multi-disciplinary initiatives to complete a variety of tasks.
  • People management experience. 
  • Previous track record of successful strategic leadership and management, with high level strategic capability and ability to maintain a clear focus on long term goals.
  • Thorough knowledge of strategic and business planning processes. 
  • Experience in technical decision making.
  • Demonstrated experience in making business decisions with financial impacts.
  • Experience working in regional economic development.
  • Awareness of Tikanga Māori
  • Desired but not essential is for established networks of in the Northland region
