Job Description

Youth Justice Coordinator (permanent 40 hours per fortnight)

 

Oranga Tamariki, Poutini Waiora, Te Runanga o Makaawhio  and  Te Runanga o Ngati Waewae are working together to employ the right person who will:

  • Make a positive difference for tamariki, rangatahi and whānau
  • Be a recognised leader in their field
  • Have a direct and meaningful relationship with rangatahi supporting them to move beyond the criminal justice system
  • Join a high functioning team committed to getting the best outcomes for Rangatahi
  • Understand the West Coast of the South Island community

 

The Youth Justice team work in partnership with young offenders and their families, iwi, courts, Police Youth Aid, Youth Workers, youth community organisations and schools to find the right local solutions to reduce the rate and severity of youth re-offending. 

 


About the role:
The Youth Justice Coordinator works with families/whānau and the wider community to hold Rangatahi accountable and to address all the factors which have led them to offend. The Youth Justice Coordinator will incorporate a restorative justice approach within their practice to ensure that the victims of crime have an opportunity to have things ‘put right' for them by the offender.
Youth Justice Coordinators are responsible for managing Family Group Conferences (FGCs) in terms of the Children, Young Persons and their Families Act 1989, so they will bring excellent group facilitation and mediation skills, along with experience in the youth justice/social services sector and sound knowledge of youth law and/or practice.

 


About you:
We are looking for the person who can engage Māori rangatahi and whānau and is comfortable in te ao Māori and wants to live on the West coast of the South Island. They will be enthusiastic skilled practitioners who can help us by positively influencing rangatahi to accept responsibility and to change their behaviours.  Someone who will ensure rangatahi voices are heard and whānau are empowered to engage in FGC and court proceedings.

 

To be successful in this role, you will be:

  • Skilled in networking and community relationship building, particularly with kaupapa Māori services and communities
  • Energetic with the motivation and ability to work flexible hours
  • Interested in improving the community
  • Able to work in culturally appropriate ways with children, young people and their families/whānau, and with victims of offending
  • Organised and skilled with IT applications
  • A full driver licence is required
