Social Worker, Care and Protection - Tauranga

Do you want to make a difference for tamariki, rangatahi and whānau? With changes to how Oranga Tamariki will operate into the future, we have a new position available where you will join a close, supportive and fun team using the latest strengths-based tools and assessment frameworks in a Social Worker role at our Nga Parirau, Tauranga East site. This site covers the area from Mt Maunganui through Te Puke in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. 


What you will do?
•    Hear children and young people's voices and support them or their families to make positive changes
•    Work alongside various cultural groups and people from different backgrounds
•    Complete initial safety checks and assessments on the tamariki, rangatahi and whānau
•    Hold a hui; supporting whānau to grow their capacity to care for their tamariki and rangatahi 
•    Be involved in planning what social work is required to be delivered to these families
•    Gather and analyse information then on a factual basis refer to appropriate services
•    Work alongside partners in our community, non-government organisations and state sector agencies
•    Transition tamariki and rangatahi back to their whānau or into their forever home
•    Be an advocate on behalf of children to ensure they have the support and resources needed to reach their full potential 
•    Work closely with the Child Protection Police team when supporting children who are victims of abuse


What you will bring?
•    A full, clean, valid driver's licence
•    Full registration with New Zealand's Social Work Registration Board (SWRB) or able to register
•    A social worker qualification recognised by the SWRB
•    The ability to work well under pressure, unsupervised and to tight deadlines
•    Have experience in a frontline role directly working with tamariki, rangatahi and whānau 
•    Empathy, patience and ability to see past what someone may be struggling with
•    The ability to analyse and prepare social work and financial plans
•    Sound judgement and organisation skills
•    The ability to manage risk and make tough decisions
•    Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt to your audience
•    Fantastic written skills as you will need to write accurate and complex court reports and case notes
•    Knowledge of or willingness to learn skills around hui a whānau and Te Reo
•    A positive outlook and supporting nature
•    Understanding or knowledge of community agencies, referral processes and local providers within the Tauranga Moana area would be an advantage

What team you will work with?


As part of our new ways of working, we are seeking a qualified social worker for our Intake and Assessment team at our Tauranga East site Nga Parirau. We are a new high performing site built upon a platform of solid team work and quality practice. We have a total of 30 staff working together to make sure the safety of our tamariki and rangatahi is paramount. We love a good competition with us winning an inter-site kapa haka competition and inter-site leadership skit competition. There is never a dull moment; every day is different especially the day when our leaders performed the Fresh Prince of Bel Air rap at our inter-site leadership skit competition, and won.
