Job Description

Play a key role in shaping the Government's economic policy agenda

  • Help the Treasury build its evidence base about productivity and economic growth
  • Analyse New Zealand's economic performance and contribute to advice to Ministers on how to raise living standards for New Zealanders
  • Be part of a supportive, enthusiastic and high performing team

The Treasury is the New Zealand Government's lead economic and financial advisor. Our vision is to be a world-leading Treasury working towards higher living standards for New Zealanders. We have an opportunity for a talented and high achieving Senior Analyst to join the Economic Strategy and Productivity (ESP) team.

The ESP team heads the Treasury's advice to Government on building a productive, sustainable and inclusive economy. We apply the Treasury's Living Standards Framework to our strategic policy advice on the Government's budget priorities and New Zealand's economic performance.

We are looking for a curious and dedicated individual to help us establish a Research & Evidence function within the ESP team, to support and enhance the Treasury's strategic policy advice.

Reporting to the Principal Advisor, Economic Performance, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • Help to scope, design and deliver the Research and Evidence function
  • Analyse, understand and advise on New Zealand's economic performance, with a particular focus on productivity
  • Contribute to the Treasury's advice to Ministers on economic policy settings
  • Support the team's relationships with the Productivity Commission and Statistics New Zealand, including Vote management responsibilities.

This role would suit those with 5+ years' experience working in economics, research and public policy. Senior Analysts at the Treasury have a significant breadth and depth of analytical experience, and provide guidance and mentoring to others as well as leading complex and thought-provoking projects. In this role you would be helping two graduate Analysts to develop in their roles while growing your own leadership skills.

If you set high standards for yourself, enjoy working on complex and important research questions, and understand how to present information to get through to varied audiences, then we would like to hear from you.

Our ideal applicant will have quantitative research skills, experience in applying economic frameworks, an understanding of government fiscal management processes, and fantastic relationship management skills. They will also be willing to "think fresh" and question the status quo. Experience working directly with Ministers is desirable but not essential.

We can offer

  • Interesting work across diverse topics, with the opportunity to drive real change and improve living standards for New Zealanders
  • A collaborative work environment where you will interact with lots of different people inside and outside the Treasury
  • A commitment to providing work and training opportunities that support your development and career aspirations
  • A friendly, fun team environment where everyone is supported to meet high standards.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our staff and understand the importance of fostering a working environment where excellence is recognised and where staff are encouraged to develop their own talents and potential. The Treasury values diversity amongst its employees and please talk to us about flexible work options.

Secondments from other government agencies will be considered.

Applications close - Sunday 17 November. All applications must be made online.
