Job Description

Closing date: 11:30pm, 17 November 2019

Offender Employment (OE) is all about giving prisoners the opportunity to gain skills and work experience to increase their chances of obtaining employment after release. Come and join our dedicated grounds and assets maintenance team.

We are looking for an experienced, qualified Trade Painter to join our Internal Services Team. Our ideal person will be someone who is passionate about providing a quality service to our operations within the scope of grounds and assets maintenance.

As an Instructor you will provide front line service by training and developing prisoners within a commercial environment. You will improve prisoner work habits, work experience and skills and thereby increase their chances of obtaining sustainable employment upon release.

The role involves working both inside and outside the “wire”, ensuring the upkeep of our buildings both internal and external is carried out to the highest levels across Canterbury Prisons in general. The role also entails supervising and training prisoners in the skills required to achieve a recognised qualification.

Initially the assignment on offer is based at Christchurch Women's Prison.

To be successful you will have:

  • The ability to accept responsibility.
  • Great people skills with the motivation to want to manage and develop people.
  • A full current drivers licence.

It is preferable that applicants have a relevant qualification and experience in the Industries of Painting or Maintenance. Previous teaching or educational experience to NZQA unit standard 4098 would be a distinct advantage, along with a current first aid certificate.

The hours of work will be 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Full pre-employment medical, physical readiness assessment and drug test must be completed by the preferred candidate.

Please note: If shortlisted you may need to attend an Assessment Centre on either 3rd or 4th December. If successful you will be required to undertake the full eleven-week custodial training course at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt on commencement of this position. This is also the training our Corrections Officers receive.
