Job Description

Adviser on Deaf Children

Blenheim, Part Time 

As an Adviser on Deaf Children (AODC), you will play a critical role in our Learning Support team by:

  • Providing specialist support to babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Providing professional support and guidance to schools, teachers, and families; and building the capacity of those who are best placed to support the learning of these babies and children
  • Providing appropriate specialist intervention plans
  • Working as part of a trans-disciplinary team where a child's needs are complex

To be successful you will need:

  • To want to make a real difference in children and young people's lives
  • To be keen to join a passionate Learning Support team, based in Blenheim, covering Marlborough and Kaikoura
  • A Masters of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) or a Diploma of Adviser on Deaf and Hearing Impaired Children.  If you do not have either of those qualifications but you have a Teacher of the Deaf or Speech & Language Therapist (or equivalent qualification) with at least two years' experience in that role, you will be considered but you will be required to complete the Masters of Education (Sensory Disabilities/Hearing Impairment) within four years after appointment.  If required, a study award may be available through the Ministry of Education
  • The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Knowledge and experience in language, communication, and child development
  • Experience and knowledge of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) or a commitment to learning NZSL
  • A current full driver's license
