We have an exciting opportunity within our Māori Agribusiness Directorate for a Senior Adviser to lead and manage the delivery of initiatives enabling Māori to maximise the benefits from the sustainable use of their primary sector assets in order to increase the sustainable productivity of Māori primary sector assets.

The Māori Agribusiness Directorate sits within Agriculture & Investment Services Business Unit, which works to create a thriving and sustainable future for farmers, growers, primary industries, and rural communities. It also cares for the health and well-being of animals. 

This is a key role, where your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing strategic analysis and advice to the Ministry on emerging and future issues, opportunities and risks, concerning Māori economic development.
  • Contributing to the success of the government's work programme on Māori economic development by identifying new initiatives and leveraging off the range of MPI funding programmes.
  • Designing and developing initiatives that have the ability to scale up and replicate across communities.
  • Ensure effective partnerships with staff at all levels throughout MPI, with government agencies, sectoral stakeholders and Māori by implementing engagement strategies that build and sustain effective relationships, building Māori capability to maximise economic benefits.

 We are looking for people who have the following background and experience: 

  • Experience working in the primary sector or related industry or science based organisation.
  • Ability to initiate and complete a number of tasks in an organised, logical and timely manner in order to deliver on organisational outcomes
  • A good understanding of the practical implications of Māori land legislation, and the realities of Māori land management and development.
  • A strong track record of working with iwi/hapu/Māori and delivering results.
  • Proven ability to manage complex relationships.
  • A well-developed understanding of nga tikanga me nga kaupapa Māori and the Treaty of Waitangi, and how these affect landowners' aspirations.
  • Ability to quickly grasp and communicate complex issues and find innovative solutions.
  • Fluency in Te Reo Māori would be highly advantageous.
