About the Role│Kōrero mō te tūranga

As Forest Fire Coordinator you will have the unique opportunity to act as a guardian of New Zealand's forest taonga and ensure forestry interests are well respected under fire management and response frameworks to ultimately protect the sustainable and economically vibrant future we're striving to achieve. You will work closely with Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and collaborate across Te Uru Rākau, forest owners, growers and other land management agencies to provide guidance on response framework improvements and ensure appropriate fire preparedness including emergency management – fire reduction, readiness, response and recovery.

You will be the central coordinator of fire related information and will establish networks for improved collaboration and communication with stakeholders.  During a fire response you will attend as an observer and consultant and support the exchange of information between frontline response agencies and the forest sector. You will collaborate across the sector and provide guidance on fire management and response frameworks improvements.  You will partner with Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) assist with education and communication efforts on fire preparedness and prevention management for the forestry sector.

Core responsibilities for the role: 

  • Act as the key coordinator amongst forest owners & growers, land management organisations and FENZ.
  • Establish and a national forum of land management organisations.
  • Attend as an observer and consultant in the Incident Management headquarters of any multi-day campaign fire and support collaboration between agencies to assist with a response.
  • Communication with Te Uru Rakau and the Minister of Forestry, FENZ and the Forest Owners Association (FOA) informed on fire related matters as they emerge – changes and impacts of wildfires on the industry

This is a fixed term or secondment position for two years.

 

About You│Mōu

Key to your success in this role is your mix of technical expertise, communication skills and your ability to operate effectively under pressure.

To be successful in this role, you will also offer: 

  • Demonstrated a minimum of 10 years' experience in wildfire and forest management
  • Proven experience working with the Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) or similar response framework
  • Excellent writing skills and experience in producing Situation Reports (Sit Rep's).
  • Proven ability to facilitate and maintain strong productive relationships with all stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively under pressure
  • Experience in risk management to support decision making and identify controls.

There will be some travel will be required when necessary to deliver in this position.

Salary range for this role is $91,162 to midpoint $107,249 depending on skills and experience.
