Job Description

Principal Policy Advisor

  • Do you want to work with complex policy issues balancing economic, social, cultural and environmental considerations?
  • Do you have considerable experience in the development and application of policy frameworks? Do you enjoy leading complex policy projects?
  • Do you enjoy coaching and mentoring others to grow their policy capability?

Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is a diverse government agency that impacts most New Zealanders. We do this by pursuing four outcomes: helping ensure geographic and property information contributes to better decision making; that New Zealanders continue to benefit from an up-to-date property rights system; that the Crown's land is put best to use; and that overseas ownership of sensitive assets is in New Zealand's best interests.

In this role within the Policy and Overseas Investment (POI) Group you'll be responsible for providing strategic policy advice on a number of LINZ's systems, namely property systems. You will help ensure that LINZ's policy advice is strategy led, including by promoting alignment between strategic, operational and regulatory policy advice within LINZ. Working collaboratively across central and local government on significant policy reforms, you'll be taking the lead on complex policy projects and the development of new policy.   You'll also be responsible for coaching and mentoring others to increase their capability.

Work currently on the go or upcoming includes:

  • Inputting into rebuild of Land Online to identify and drive key opportunities for the New Zealand property system
  • Property Information system review and design
  • Working closely with Te Puni Kōkiri on the Whenua Māori reforms

Assimilating new information quickly and thinking on your feet both come naturally to you, as does presenting at Ministerial level where you easily gain credibility. Obviously you'll have lots of experience delivering policy via the policy development process and have good knowledge of parliamentary processes.

It goes without saying that after a successful career to date, you'll come with strong public sector networks, which you'll be able to leverage off to build and maintain positive working relationships across government.

We work in a fast paced environment that has a high interest and scrutiny. If you have relevant qualifications, at least 7 years experience in a policy role and are looking for the opportunity to be part of a dynamic team then this opportunity is for you! We are open to consider candidates who are seeking part-time hours.

As an organisation LINZ embraces diversity, encourages work life balance and we have a flexible approach to the way we work which means you will quickly feel connected and valued.  We also have a variety of networking groups within LINZ so you will have the opportunity to engage across LINZ and enjoy your interactions with others.
