Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the Role

Science and research supports everything we do – with the right information we make more informed decisions. Science, technology and innovation are important for strengthening our primary industries and positioning them for the future. The office of the Chief Departmental Science Adviser (CDSA) to was established to provide strategic and technical advice to the Director–General of the Ministry for Primary Industries on matters of science, science policy and the use of evidence in policy formation.  

A new role as Research Analyst and Writer has been established in the Office of the CDSA. The Research Analyst and Writer will provide research, statistical analysis, writing and operational support to the CDSA of the Ministry for Primary Industries, through the literature reviews, data collation and analysis, preparation of advice and written materials in support of the CDSA's work plan. Some key responsibilities for the role are:

  • Undertake research, writing and critical analysis of evidence on topics, as required by the CDSA;
  • Synthesise information from a broad evidence base into accessible reports and other materials;
  • Keep the CDSA abreast of the evidence base by means of written reports and assist with presentations;
  • Provide effective planning and scheduling to keep projects within scope and to timelines.

This is an exciting new opportunity for an individual with a relevant Masters or PhD and with experience and interest in scientific disciplines related to the primary sector to be part of a small, passionate and high profile team within MPI.

We are looking for someone with a Strong work ethic and drive to deliver; willingness to go the extra mile in times of urgent workload. You will have a good technical understanding and interest in a field of science/technology specific to the primary sector.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong understanding of the interface between science and public policy or enthusiasm to learn
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication ability and proven ability to adapt communication approaches to diverse audiences
  • Superb English editing skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Awareness of sensitive and controversial issues and discretion in dealing with these
