Job Description

Play a key role in shaping the Government's economic policy agenda at the intersection of research and policy

  • Connect your policy colleagues with the latest evidence on productivity and economic growth
  • Analyse New Zealand's economic performance and contribute to advice to Ministers on how to raise living standards for New Zealanders
  • Be part of a supportive, enthusiastic and high performing team

The Treasury is the New Zealand Government's lead economic and financial advisor. Our vision is to be a world-leading Treasury working towards higher living standards for New Zealanders. We have an opportunity for a talented and high achieving Senior Analyst to join the Economic Strategy and Productivity (ESP) team.

The ESP team directs the Treasury's advice to Government on building a productive, sustainable and inclusive economy. We apply the Treasury's Living Standards Framework to our strategic policy advice on the Government's budget priorities and New Zealand's economic performance.

Within ESP is a recently established Economic Performance team. It is tasked with helping ESP advisors to access relevant research and evidence on economic growth and productivity, to support the development of high-quality evidence-based policy advice. It is also responsible for Vote management and associated activities for the Productivity Commission and Statistics New Zealand.

Reporting to the Principal Advisor, Economic Performance, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • Help design and implement systems, processes and products to connect their ESP policy colleagues with the evidence base on New Zealand's economic performance, with a particular focus on productivity
  • Build or maintain a network of valuable relationships with research and policy colleagues across the Treasury and at other agencies
  • Contribute to the Treasury's advice to Ministers on economic policy
  • Lead or support the team's relationships with the Productivity Commission and Statistics New Zealand, including Vote management responsibilities.

Senior Analysts at the Treasury have a significant breadth and depth of analytical experience, and provide guidance and mentoring to others as well as heading up complex and challenging projects. In this role you would be helping two graduate analysts to develop in their roles while growing your own leadership skills.

Our ideal applicant will have 5+ years' experience working in policy or policy-focused research, plus experience in applying economic frameworks, an understanding of government fiscal management processes, and good people skills.

If you enjoy working at the intersection of research and policy, get satisfaction from helping your colleagues, and want to be supported to set and meet high standards, then we would like to hear from you.

We can offer

  • Interesting work across diverse topics, with the opportunity to drive real change and improve living standards for New Zealanders
  • A collaborative work environment where you will interact with lots of different people inside and outside the Treasury
  • A commitment to providing work and training opportunities that support your development and career aspirations
  • A friendly, fun team environment where everyone is supported to meet high standards.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our staff and understand the importance of fostering a working environment where excellence is recognised and where staff are encouraged to develop their own talents and potential. The Treasury values diversity amongst its employees and please talk to us about flexible work options.

Secondments from other government agencies will be considered.

Applications close Wednesday 11 December. All applications must be made online.
