Job Description

The New Zealand Customs Service protects and promotes New Zealand across borders. We promote New Zealand's international trade, collect due Crown revenue, and enforce the law by identifying and seizing prohibited imports and exports. We also make sure that lawful traveller's and items can move across our border as smoothly as possible.

Our Māori name - Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa - translates as "the authority that screens and protects New Zealand".

The Senior Advisor, Assurance is part of the Risk, Assurance and Integrity team, a team that provides the Comptroller with independent assurance on Customs' processes and controls, and advisory services that support the organisation across a range of integrity-related matters.

We are looking for an experienced, self-motivated internal auditor to manage the assurance programme for New Zealand Customs.  The Senior Advisor, Assurance helps Customs achieve its objectives by:

  • taking a lead in the ongoing development of assurance frameworks and strategies
  • designing and developing a coordinated and integrated annual assurance work programme
  • ensuring a practical and flexible approach to the planning and delivery of assurance engagements and services
  • providing objective assessments of the adequacy and effectiveness of systems, processes and controls.

We are looking for someone who brings a broad knowledge and perspective to the RA&I team to provide the Comptroller, the Executive, the Assurance and Risk Committee and senior managers with independent advice and assurance on the effectiveness of existing processes, internal controls and safeguards over strategic, operational, financial and other risks.

The successful applicant will work collaboratively with all levels of Customs to appropriately inform and influence the design and implementation of new systems and processes responding to Customs' strategic objectives.

You will hold a relevant qualification, preferably be a chartered accountant, however this is not essential.  You'll ideally have some public sector experience, and familiarity with all of Govt procurement processes would be an advantage

Your highly developed communication skills will mean that you have a natural ability to build rapport and present your findings in a way that is meaningful with all levels of the organisation, right through to the highest leadership level.  Your recommendations will need to be balanced, taking into account the requirements as well as what is practical and achievable.
