The purpose of the role 

We want to be sure the ongoing evolution of Census in New Zealand actively supports the needs and interests of our Māori and iwi communities.

As Senior Manager Māori, Census, you will be instrumental in improving census information for and about Māori as well as increasing understanding and use of census information by Māori.  Reporting to the General Manager Census, your flair for inspirational communication will come to the fore as you work closely alongside our dedicated Communications and Engagement team to ensure a consistent and collaborative approach to internal and external stakeholder engagement.

A member of Stats NZ s leadership team, you will be the steward for Te Rautaki Māori the Census Māori Strategy which will guide the Census programme to achieve its primary goal of increasing the value and use of data for and about Māori, through increased Māori participation in the census.  You will also be counted on to improve the capability of census employees in te ao Māori, to embed the spirit and intentions of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and to implement the principles outlined from Te Rautaki Māori to affect positive change for Māori people in New Zealand.

Person specifications

This position will suit a senior professional with the following expertise and qualities:

  • Demonstrated experience in building relationships with Māori and iwi communities, landowners, customers, suppliers, relevant agencies and all levels of government (e.g. local, regional, national)
  • Experience of managing, motivating and developing a multi-disciplinary workforce and harnessing the talents of employees at all levels
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity and our obligations under the treaty
  • Comfort with te reo Ma ori and tikanga on a day-to-day working level, including imparting Te Rautaki Māori across the Census programme
  • Comfort working with, leading and promoting data, including improving its use and availability to support decision making
  • Track record of success as a senior manager, with a breadth of relevant industry experience. Includes capability and record of effectively managing a Māori or first nations people function, driving action and continuous improvement
  • Known for engaging with and influencing people and for coaching and developing others
  • Understanding of partnering and co-design
  • Be intellectually, analytically and conceptually agile and experienced in dealing with complex matters
