Job Description

  • Two part-time opportunities: 0.7FTE permanent and 0.8FTE fixed-term for approximately 18 months

  • Work within an experienced multi-disciplinary team to provide integral support to children in our care

  • Experience as a Registered Hospital Play Specialist is preferential, however experienced Registered Early Childhood Teacher's will also be considered

Our Purpose: Why we do it

When you work with the Canterbury District Health Board, you're part of something very special. We plan, fund and deliver health services to the almost 600,000 people that live in the Canterbury region. Our primary goal is to put people at the heart of everything we do.

The Team: What we do

Our Christchurch Hospital Activity Room is a vital part of our children's recovery. Play in hospital helps children and young people understand, cope with illness, regain confidence and express their feelings. Working with children from birth to 16 years, your experience as a teacher will be invaluable to helping children during their hospital stay.

This is a very challenging but rewarding role. This role involves working in the Activity Room, working on the paediatric wards including treatment rooms and working within a multi-disciplinary team.

We have two exciting opportunities available:

  • Permanent part-time working 28 hours per week (0.7FTE). Days and hours to be negotiated
  • Fixed-term, part-time working 32 hours per week (0.8FTE) until approximately September 2021. Days and hours required for this position are to be negotiated

Please clearly indicate in your cover letter which position you are applying for, or whether you would like to be considered for either vacancy.

The Role: Where you fit in

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Establishing rapport with the children and their family and play alongside them to build trust. Through these relationships you'll attempt to minimise the psychological impact on the child while in hospital
  • Integrating emotional support through preparation and play aiming to improve the child's ability to cope

Your skills will include the following:

  • Ability to adapt and work effectively within a variety of situations and with various individuals or groups
  • Strong organisational, prioritisation and time management skills
  • A strength with behaviour management
  • The ability to relate to people with warmth and sensitivity
  • Ability to contribute to ongoing quality improvement processes
  • A clear confident communicator
  • A strong ability to analyse, prioritise and plan for all children
  • Experience as a Registered Hospital Play Specialist is preferential
  • Experienced Registered Early Childhood Teacher's will also be considered who are willing to work towards becoming a Registered Hospital Play Specialist
