Job Description

What you will do

As the Media Advisor, you will provide support to both the Media and Communications Manager and other members of the media team.  You will be responsible for:

  • Managing the media log;
  • Providing media (all type) analytics for NZDF;
  • Answering the media phone;
  • Managing the relationship with an external media monitoring organisation (iSentia);
  • Collating of content for the Digital Poster Boards.


What we need

To be successful in this role, you will have excellent organisational skills and the ability to effectively deliver and manage commitments in order to deliver on requests.  You will possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate both written and orally across a wide range of stakeholders.  Additionally, you will need to have:

  • An understanding of external communications, public relations and social media concepts and processes;
  • An understanding of issues and reputation management;
  • Precise decision making skills and the ability to prioritise;
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in journalism, public relations, communication or related discipline.

The Public Affairs purpose is to directly enhance the reputation and identity of the NZDF internally and externally. Through the provision of creative services (including content development, editing, imagery, and design), digital expertise, marketing, media relations, and business partnership, the group provides for the integration of all NZDF public affairs activity. The Public Affairs plays an important role in maintaining confidence in the NZDF by coordinating, advising and leveraging military commemorations, heritage and protocol.

Please note: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand (NZ) and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance for the position applied for. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
