Job Description

The New Zealand Customs Service protects and promotes New Zealand through excellent border management. We promote New Zealand's international trade, collect Crown revenue, and enforce the law by identifying and seizing prohibited imports and exports. We also make sure that lawful traveller's and items can move across our border as smoothly as possible.

Our Māori name - Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa - translates as "the authority that screens and protects New Zealand".

At Customs, we are always looking at how we can use technology to make our services the best they can be. That is why we put SmartGates in airports, built a new import and exports system shared with our border agency partners, apply data analytics to manage risks, and use screening technologies to look into cargo containers.   We are about to do a whole lot more to help protect and promote New Zealand, and need an Applications Developer to design, develop, deploy and support front line applications.

What you are going to need to do well:

  • Be experienced in designing and developing Java applications, preferably using an Enterprise Application Server (we use JBOSS)
  • Be able to adapt to and learn new technologies and methodologies as required
  • Deliver quality outcomes, even when under pressure
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Work well both independently and as part of a highly collaborative team
  • Have the ability to work flexibly, delivering change and support across multiple products and services.

It would be even better if you have:

  • Three to five years of relevant experience in developing software
  • A good knowledge of relevant software development topics, including development languages, databases, methodologies, DevOps, build pipelines, automation, API's, cloud concepts
  • An understanding of other related areas such as UX design, product development, networking, security compliance and capacity management.

We are willing to grow the right candidate, so are happy to hear from less experienced applicants who can show strong potential.

Note this role does involve providing regular on-call support. This will usually be for one week in four (or less) and we expect that typically there will be no more than one call-out, per week of being on-call.

To Apply:

You must be a New Zealand Citizen or be a NZ Permanent Resident, and obtain and maintain the required security clearance and pass a drug test. Please submit a CV and cover letter that shows your ability to meet the skills required for the role.

New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa is a member of Diversity Works New Zealand and is committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive workplace. We provide equal employment opportunities, consider flexible working arrangements and welcome applications from everyone who can meet the requirements of the role.
