Fixed-term for the duration of the Commission (until 2023)

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Research Advisor to fill a newly created position with the commission. You will play a big part in refining and implementing the research programme. You will wear many hats and the role will be highly varied, so you will need to be accustomed and comfortable with change and variety.

What you'll do

You will be applying your research knowledge and experience to implement and deliver key programmes of work, guide more junior researchers and work across the commission to help meet the Inquiry's goals.

This is going to be an extremely rewarding role, but there will be challenges along the way. First and foremost, you will need to be resilient, and possess the following skills, experience and attributes.

What you'll bring for success:

  • Strong competencies in all aspects of communications including written, oral, and relationship management
  • A commitment and ability to deliver high quality evidence-based research advice
  • Excellent understanding and application of research methodologies and processes
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to deliver and drive results
  • Resilience and comfortable working in a highly complex and ambiguous environment
  • Professional and political nous to reflect the skills needed of an independent Royal Commission
  • Post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline, eg, qualitative research methods
  • Experience in providing high quality research analysis and advice
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and consultation
  • Experience in peer review of research work
  • Experience leading research projects using project management disciplines
  • Sound understanding of the machinery of government

About us

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care was established in February 2018. The Inquiry will investigate the abuse and neglect of children, young people and vulnerable adults who were in the care of State and faith-based institutions in New Zealand between 1950 and 1999 and examine ways to stop further abuse.

The Royal Commission is committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Treaty Engagement team bring a kaupapa, tikanga and te reo Māori focus to the development of the Inquiry work programme.
