Job Description

What you will do

In this role you will be responsible for the accurate health assessment and management or referral of all Youth Development Unit (YDU) trainees suffering from sickness or injury, nursing support and triage of trainees in the Youth Development Unit. You will also advise on and write policy for YDU.

What we need

We are seeking a NZ registered nurse with significant experience from within a primary healthcare and or emergency department setting. This is a role that focuses on youth; you must have prior experience of working with youth especially from varied cultural backgrounds.

YDU has a structured environment and all courses have timetabled events.  All staff and students need a good level of personal organisation. Being able to work in a team and adapt to changing situations is an important part of working in the Unit. This role is a little different in that you will occasionally work with our trainees while they are completing phases in the bush or on field exercises.  

You will be managing health issues that present and where appropriate referring to GP services or other external health providers. Another aspect of the role is to complete health assessments on all trainees.

Some other key duties are:

  • Carry out and supervise Medical Officer directions in relation to policy, patient care, safety, treatments and education;
  • Provide relevant and appropriate nursing care and health information to staff and Trainees;
  • Provide information as to the state of health of the YDU Trainees to the YDU Command Element as required;
  • Develop relationships with external health providers;
  • Work in collaboration with external providers as needed to ensure trainees' health and safety needs are met;
  • Advise, write, review and update YDU Operating Procedures on medical/health matters;
  • Carry out accurate clinical assessment and collaborate with YDU Command to provide advice on risk mitigation strategies to be able to maintain health and safety of the YDU Trainees and workplace safety;
  • Provide relevant and up-to-date health training for staff and trainees;
  • Provide “on call” and “call out” support whenever courses are being conducted;
  • Ensure annual calibration checks of medical equipment are achieved and recorded;
  • Ensure nursing practice is aligned with Nursing Council of New Zealand standards and Code of Ethics;
  • Upskill and maintain levels of competency.

A current APC is essential aong with a current first aid certificate.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Low level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last five years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
