The Team: What we do

Due to recent retirement of our Director of Nursing, there is now an opportunity for a senior nursing professional to join our leadership team at Christchurch Hospital Campus. Christchurch Hospital is the largest tertiary, teaching and research hospital in the South Island of New Zealand and provides a full range of emergency, acute, elective and outpatient services in addition to a busy Emergency Department treating more than 83,000 patients a year. You will drive our values and lead our teams whilst working for a progressive and supportive organisation.

Christchurch hospital campus includes the following:

  • Christchurch Women's Hospital which provides maternity, gynaecological and obstetric services. It also has a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which provides both intensive and special care for new-born babies
  • Christchurch Outpatients building which provides a wide range of outpatient services over five floors of a new building
  • The new state of the art Hagley Hospital building which is nearing completion will include 12 new operating theatres and procedure rooms, an expanded intensive care unit, state-of-the-art radiology department, acute medical assessment, an expanded emergency department, and a rooftop helipad

You will work in partnership with the General Manager of Christchurch Hospital and the Executive Director of Nursing, transforming systems and developing a skilled and resourced workforce at the forefront of inter-disciplinary care. Leading a dynamic team of Nurses, you will shine a light on Nursing professions ensuring their centrality in the planning, implementation and delivery of services. You will be based at Christchurch Hospital but working with our services across Canterbury.

The Role: Where you fit in

This is a distinctive role within the Canterbury DHB leading our nursing workforce in an acute tertiary setting to continue delivering world class services to our consumers. This role will be working in partnership with other leaders to ensure that the CDHB is excelling in providing care to our community. In this role you will be working within a unique environment with multiple areas of growth for the right person. This role provides operational and professional nursing leadership with an opportunity to represent the Canterbury DHB at national and regional levels.

As the Director of Nursing, you will be responsible for the provision of effective professional leadership and clinical oversight for nursing within Christchurch Hospital Campus, within a multi-disciplinary context. You will be dedicated to implementing sustainable clinical governance practices that reflects optimal nursing service delivery and effective system change, while providing professional leadership for the work programme that ensures the provision of an educational framework for the nursing workforce.

Essential for this role:

  • Previous experience driving strategy and change in a senior leadership position/s within a large and complex environment
  • Extensive experience in leadership and operational management in a variety of practice settings
  • Commitment to work effectively within the wider health team building, maintaining and utilising long-term strategic relationships across a large and complex organization
  • Evidence of having applied nursing theory/research to nursing practice with demonstrated advanced clinical practice competencies
  • Ability to use the most up-to-date industry insights including technology to deliver sustainable and long-term system and sector improvements
  • Ability to influence and inspire others to embrace change and take action
  • Nursing Council of New Zealand Registration with a current Annual Practising Certificate
  • Postgraduate qualification in nursing and or health leadership and management
  • Demonstrated cultural competencies in the practice setting
