Job Description

Case Manager, Specialist Applications – Office of the Chief Registrar, Māori Land Court, Ministry of Justice, Wellington (or regionally based) x 2 roles

The modern Māori Land Court and Māori Appellate Court are enduring courts of record which are continued under Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993.

This legislative framework recognises that whenua is a taonga tuku iho of special significance to Māori, and for that reason, it is the primary objective of both Courts to promote, and assist in, the retention of Māori land in the hands of its owners, and for the effective use, management and development of that land by its owners.

The Ministry of Justice supports this framework by providing client advisory, court registry, case management, land, title and survey management as well as judicial support services for both the Māori Land Court and the Māori Appellate Court.

We currently have two Case Manager vacancies in our Wellington based Specialist Applications Team. These positions provide judicial support to the Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court, technical expertise and key case management and research services to the wider bench of the Māori Appellate Court.

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in law or equivalent experience
  • Case management experience, preferably in the legal sector
  • Experience analysing law, both statute and case law
  • Sound knowledge of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 and related legislation
  • Extensive experience in working with the judiciary or with judicial officers
  • Experience in maintaining a range of effective relationships with Māori land owners, groups, organisations and networks
  • A good general knowledge of, and respect for, tikanga Māori and a commitment to further develop your knowledge or Te Reo Māori

You will work within a well established, experienced and vibrant team alongside technical experts and you'll be flexible, clam, resilient and in no way daunted by the court environment.

Joining Tāhū o te Ture - the Ministry of Justice means you will become part of an inclusive organisation that values you and the communities we serve. It's important to us that our workplace is one where our people feel healthy and safe, supported and able to be themselves at work. We value respect as the foundation for building a positive workplace culture where diversity is welcomed and celebrated.

Whilst this position sits within Office of the Chief Registrar in Wellington, we want to hear from suitably qualified people from around the country and are open to considering regionally based roles where necessary.

Employment Type: Full time, permanent role

Location: Wellington (or co-located at a regional office of the Māori Land Court)

Salary Range: $61,744 - $87,167

Applications close on 5 April 2020
