Operations Manager, Whangarei at Department of Conservation, Auckland

This advert is for one position based in the Whangarei which has been advertised in multiple locations

It's hard to imagine a more rewarding job than leading the Operations team in Whangarei to oversee the management of public conservation land, waters and native taonga.  

Gateway to the North, this area covers the coastlines of Bream Bay, Whangarei Heads, and Tutukaka as well as Taranga and Marotere (the Hen and Chicks) and the Poor Knights offshore islands.

 

He angitūtanga: About the Role

As the Pou Matarautaki (Operations Manager) you will be responsible for leading the district's Operations team to ensure the effective delivery of high-quality conservation outcomes.  Based in Whangarei, this is an important hub for Te Papa Atawhai which comes with its own unique complexities and challenges. There is a strong relationship management component, including working alongside our iwi, hapu and whanau partners collaboratively and effectively, as well as community and local businesses. 

 

He kōrero mōu: What we are looking for

An experienced people leader who is skilled at inspiring, motivating and directing teams to deliver quality work and results, work effectively with others, and to value continuous improvement.  You will have experience and confidence in working with iwi, hapu and whanau partners to achieve mutual aspirations relating to conservation.

You will have an outgoing personality, the maturity and confidence to interact with people from all walks of life and the ability to switch between tasks effortlessly.

There can be times when the workload will be high so you will need to be able to remain calm and focused and work well under pressure.

Key skills:

  • outstanding communication skills to engage with, inspire, and create synergy across a diverse range of groups including Iwi, community organisations and other agencies
  • the ability to inspire and motivate others while fostering a culture which values teamwork
  • strong health and safety focus to enable a positive safety culture
  • strength in operating disciplines with the ability to identify further opportunities to ensure the region thrives
  • a level of political astuteness is required coupled with the ability to identify and manage risk in uncertain situations.
