We are passionate about supporting our newly graduated midwives and have a comprehensive Midwifery First Year of Practice programme and competitive New Graduate Allowance for the first two years, in addition to a relocation expenses package and pre-employment assistance.
Our New Graduate placements offer a wide range of flexible graduate streams including options such as
• Primary unit placements
• A taste of community midwifery
• Rural LMC supported practice
• Flight team training (after 1st year)
• High dependency unit expertise
In addition to the consolidation of practice through antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal experience you will become a highly skilled and competent practitioner in the tertiary setting of Waikato DHB.
Our educators, clinical coach, mentorship midwives, managers and midwifery leaders are all available to help and encourage you as you begin your midwifery journey and throughout your time in the DHB and are focused in helping you to feel safe, to work at your natural best and to leave at the end of your shift feeling fulfilled.
After your first year, we offer a number of exciting choices including the option to choose a speciality area to further enhance your skills or be part of our midwifery response team (MRT); and as you gain further experience you may find yourself considering one of the many professional development opportunities available, such as postgraduate studies, speciality midwife roles or senior midwifery positions.
Waikato is a large geographical area with a diverse urban and rural population, the hospital is a tertiary facility and our Maternity service provides care for over three and a half thousand births per year. We also serve women requiring complex care from the Midland region and we support a range of primary birthing units, bringing the total number of births in the Waikato locality to around five and a half thousand per annum.
The Waikato region is a great place to work and live, with a variety of recreational activities, comparatively affordable housing, great shopping and few traffic issues. Waikato hosts many world-class sporting events and festivals and has amazing restaurants and plenty of walking and cycling tracks. Perfect location, close to other major cities and attractions in the North Island, you could find yourself in a new location and within just over an hour access to Auckland, The City of Sails renowned for its shopping and nightlife; Rotorua for geothermal attractions, lakes, and beautiful forests; Raglan for brilliant surfing, beaches, and cafes, and if you venture a little bit further, you’ll reach the Coromandel coast with clear waters and golden sand beaches.
